Mobile Flu Care

The flu (influenza) affects millions of people every year. While for most people it’s short-lived and only leads to discomfort (and a few days off from work), for others it can be a serious condition. Those who suffer from chronic health conditions, patients in long-term care facilities, and older adults can all be at a greater risk when it comes to the flu. If not properly addressed, the flu can quickly lead to serious and even life-threatening conditions. Recovery in a hospital can also take weeks.

At Heritage Wound Care, we understand how difficult flu season can be for more vulnerable populations. Our mobile flu program is designed to detect, treat, and prevent complications—all without our patients needing to leave the comfort of their home, nursing facility, or rehab center.

Why Mobile Flu Care Matters

The flu is very contagious and can spread quickly in close-quarter living environments. This can lead to a fast-spreading illness in many nursing homes and rehab centers.

For patients who have limited mobility, it can be particularly difficult to leave these facilities and visit a physician’s office. Delaying treatment due to these constraints can lead to the illness becoming more severe and even deadly.

Mobile flu care allows a patient to receive the care they need from their bedside, while also being seen quickly and when care is needed most.

With prompt and effective care, patients are better able to fight off the flu and make a full recovery.

Our Approach to Influenza Management

Our approach to flu management is similar in structure to our mobile wound care services. Once a patient shows the signs of influenza, we provide an on-site evaluation. Here, we take into consideration risk factors like age, ongoing conditions, and immune status. If additional testing or information is needed, we partner with labs or facility staff. From there, treatment can be initiated (often within 24 hours). Once the treatment has been completed, our staff will provide follow-up care to ensure the ongoing health of the patient.

Along with timely care, we provide our patients and their families and/or caregivers with the education they need to help prevent the spread of the flu, along with what symptoms to look out for to catch the development of influenza early.

Education plays an equally important role. Our clinicians advise caregivers, families, and facility staff on best practices for reducing transmission, supporting recovery, and preventing future outbreaks.

Collaborative Care

At Heritage Wound Care, we pride ourselves on our ability to collaborate with other teams to ensure the best care possible for our patients. Whether it is working with clinics, rehab centers, nursing homes, or caregivers, we work in partnership to address the symptoms of influenza. We also help post-discharge, in conjunction with hospitals and long-term care facilities. This ensures ongoing comfort and the reduction of chances of readmission. We work closely with primary care providers as well, and we keep them up-to-date on the status of the patient.

By working with these partners, we are able to provide the optimal level of care for our patients.

Who Benefits from Mobile Flu Care?

While anyone can catch the flu, there are certain groups that are at a higher risk of severe illness and hospitalization. These include:

  • Seniors, particularly those in nursing homes
  • Those with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and/or COPD
  • Patients with a compromised immune system
  • Patients who are bedbound
  • Patients who live in group living settings

Mobile flu care can be essential for these patients.

Preventing Hospitalizations and Complications

At Heritage Wound Care, it is our goal to help reduce hospital admissions. Our weekly, ongoing visits allow us to monitor our patients, ensuring complications like pneumonia are detected early on. By providing quick treatment, we can reduce the severity of symptoms, shorten the duration of the flu, and lower the risks of worsening infection.

Our proactive approach helps to control costs, ease the burden on healthcare facilities, and protect patients from unnecessary suffering.

Support for Patients and Families

A flu diagnosis can be worrying, especially for families that are caring for loved ones who are older or medically fragile. The team at Heritage Wound Care provides not only medical treatment, but also consistent communication and reassurance. We keep family members and loved ones informed about what they can expect, how symptoms are managed, and when they may need to seek further attention.

As patients are surrounded by their loved ones and in a familiar environment during in-home treatment, we find they are more comfortable and confident in their treatment.
